Large Dog Shock Collars

Some (but not all) large dog shock collar products are perfectly fine to use on dogs under 40 pounds. For example, the manufacturer's recommendation for TriTronics shock collar systems is for use with all sizes of dogs at least 6 months old. Manufacturer's recommendation for DT Systems shock collar products is for use with dogs over 15 pounds. SportDOG recommends their products for all dogs over 8 pounds. PetSafe and Innotek have different recommendations with different models.

Improved technology has enabled electronic products in general to get smaller and smaller, and large dog shock collar products are no exception. Older models will likely be bigger and bulkier than models that have come out more recently.

Even though a large dog shock collar can deliver desired results fast, you may not have success if you don't follow training instructions in your manual and/or training DVD. For example, if you accidently adjust the intensity level too high, you may unnecessarily hurt your dog, and scare him or her. This will not bode well for training.

Instructions may vary slightly depending on which brand of shock collar for dogs you purchase. Generally speaking when you are first starting out with a large dog shock collar you should set the stimulation intensity at the lowest level. If your dog does not respond to the lowest level re-set the intensity to the next level up, and so on until you get your dog's attention and the response you want.

Large dog shock collar products for stubborn dogs
Not unlike people, dogs have unique personalities and dispositions. Some are laid-back and mild-mannered while others may be a bit headstrong. Having eight levels of stimulation gives you more options which is necessary when trying to handle hard to train dogs. Once again, the SportDOG Stubborn Dog YardTrainer is recommended for dogs at least six months of age that weigh more than eight pounds. So this model can be used as both a small and a large dog shock collar for stubborn dogs.
