Outdoor Dog Houses

Consider the climate where you live.
If you live in a place that gets really cold in the winter or super hot in the summer, you'll definitely want to consider one of our insulated dog houses. It just makes sense, especially when you consider that insulation makes such a big difference in keeping interior temperatures of dog homes more comfortable. Just like the insulation in your own home does.

The insulated dog house models that we sell have insulation inside the wall panels and inside the rooftop. Different manufacturers use different materials for insulation. We don't carry an already set up heated dog house, but we do carry accessories to heat and/or cool outdoor dog houses. You can get a dog house heater, a dog house solar fan, or go all out and get an HVAC unit which is the Climate Control Dog House Heater and Air Conditioner (the unit is also a de-humidifier).

What size is best for your dog's outdoor house?
After deciding whether or not you'll need an insulated pet house you'll want to turn your attention to size. We carry outdoor dog houses in all sizes, from small dog house models all the way up to extra large dog house models. We even carry duplex dog houses for two dogs. Duplexes also come in various sizes.

As far as size the most important thing to be absolutely sure of before purchasing one of our outdoor dog houses is whether or not the dimensions of the entrance are large enough for your dog.

Some manufacturers of outdoor dog houses make size recommendations based on a dog's weight or breed. Such recommendations can lead you astray; instead you should compare the actual dimensions of the entrance to the actual size of your dog. Don't go by weight or breed recommendations because they are far too general. In other words, not all big dog houses are ideal for breeds that are generally considered large. You really need to measure.

Once you determine that the dog house door is large enough for your dog to fit through you'll want to consider the interior dimensions - floor space as well as the height from floor to ceiling. Ideally, you'll want enough space inside so your dog can lie down comfortably and stand up to turn around. But you don't want it to be much roomier than that for two good reasons.

First, outdoor dog houses that are an appropriate size will retain a dog's body heat much better than will overly large dog houses. The second reason is because most animals, including dogs, prefer to relax in small, easy to monitor spaces. An easy to monitor space provides a sense of security.

Construction materials
Outdoor dog houses are manufactured in a variety of materials including wood, plastic and eco-friendly post-consumer waste materials. Most of our wood dog house models are made from cedar while others are made from kiln-dried fir wood such as those manufactured by Merry Products. According to Merry Products fir wood has natural qualities that are similar to those of cedar including a resistance to moisture, rot and insects.

All of our cedar dog house models are insulated. However, our most popular insulated dog houses for sale are made with plastic and contain serious insulation. They are the DP Hunter insulated dog house and the Dog Palace Insulated Dog House. True, these models are not as stylish or attractive as our wood models, but they are insulated to the hilt. We carry eco-friendly dog houses by New Age Pet that are made with a mix of wood fibers and post-consumer recycled polymers. The material offers both the weather-resistance of polymers plus some qualities found in wooden dog houses. These outdoor dog houses can be painted any color so long as latex paint is used, however they do not have to be painted.

What about style?
Outdoor dog houses come in many styles so you can select one that compliments the style of your home. There are classic styles such as Ware A-frame dog houses or Merry Products log home dog houses.
