IMPORTANT: Not all pet doors for sliding glass doors will fit all types of sliders. Please read each model’s description very carefully. Some are created specifically to fit aluminum frame, vinyl, or wood framed doors.
Different models of pet doors for sliding glass doors, also called pet doors for sliders, offer different options for mounting methods. The most popular models are patio pet panels.
The advantage of patio pet panels is there is no alteration to your door at all. The panel (with the pet door already built in) is as tall as your slider and sits on the same track. The disadvantage of these types of pet doors for sliding glass doors is they leave less space for the door to slide open to allow people to walk through.
Be sure to take note of the width of any patio pet panel you are thinking of buying and compare it with your sliding door. After installation, will there still be enough room left over for you to be able to walk through comfortably? If the answer is yes, then these no-fuss Pet Doors for Patio Doors might be just the right thing for you.
NOTE: Some patio pet panel models, such as the Pet 1 Products panel, are designed to be very easy to remove. This is convenient for times when you need the full amount of space to open your sliding glass door.
Another option, if you are not able or willing to give up any of the space available to open your sliders, is to install a screen mount pet door in your patio screen door. This option preserves the full space available to open your door, but does require a more complex installation into the screen door itself. Leading brands of screen mount dog doors are Hale Pet Door, Ideal Pet Door, and PetSafe.
Another popular option for pet doors for sliding glass doors are those that are installed directly in the glass of the door. A professional installer is generally required for this approach but it a good option if you are okay with permanently altering your door.
Hale Pet Doors, CatWalk Cat Doors, and Staywell Pet Doors offer “in glass” models of pet doors for sliding glass doors. If you or your handyman is not experienced in cutting glass, contact your local glass supply company as they are often willing to do custom installations of this type of pet door.
Automatic pet doors are also very popular but there are only a couple of manufacturers that make automatic pet doors for sliding glass doors. Automatic pet doors slide up and down like a garage door when they receive a signal sent from a tiny transmitter that is worn on your pet’s collar. High Tech Power Pet Doors makes 2 models; one for medium sized pets and one for large pets. Ideal also makes an automatic door for sliders; they call it a “cat door” as it is one of their small pet doors. But the pet entrance is 7”W x 9”H, so it might work for small dogs just fine.
So depending on your preference, one of our pet doors for sliding glass doors may be the right solution for you. Be sure to research the various types to determine which method works best for you, your dog, and your home.
