Small Bird Cages

Parakeet bird cages, or cages for similarly sized small birds, must have appropriate bar spacing to ensure safety. This is true of flight cages or a cage for just one small bird. When it comes to bird cages, bigger is almost always better when choosing a home for your bird - even if he or she is small. If your bird's size falls somewhere between small and medium, America's Pet Store will almost always recommend one of our medium sized bird cages.

There may be some exceptions to "bigger is better". If you are among the lucky people who can keep your bird out of the cage for extended periods of time every day, then you may be okay with a small bird cage.

But even so, small bird cages should at least be large enough to allow your bird to fully spread his wings and to sit on the top perch and still have enough head room. It is also important to be sure that the small bird cages you are considering purchasing for your pet are safe. Safety considerations for small bird cages include:

Bar Spacing
Space between bars on small bird cages should be narrow enough to prevent injury or escape. The bars are too far apart if your bird can fit his or her head between them.

Construction Materials
Small bird cages made from wrought iron steel or cold rolled steel usually have a powder coating. Small bird cages for sale at America's Pet Store are made by responsible, reputable manufacturers and are certified to be safe. Stainless steel bird cages are naturally non-toxic to birds because they contain no zinc or lead.

For that reason, stainless steel is also your best bet for feeding dishes in small bird cages, or any size cage for that matter, because they absolutely, positively do not contain lead or zinc. (Do not use other types of metal feeding dishes unless you know for certain they are bird safe.)

Another advantage with stainless steel feeding dishes is they last a long time, maybe even forever, and they are easy to sanitize because they are 100% non-porous. On the other hand, plastic or ceramic feeding dishes can absorb bacteria and can be very difficult to sanitize. (And ceramic can break.)

Perches
If you're new to bird ownership, you may be surprised to learn how important it is to have perches that are appropriate for your bird. First, they should be the right size. If it is too big or too small in diameter, your bird will have difficulty getting a good grip. The best perches are natural, irregularly shaped wood (as are the branches birds perch on in the wild).

The contours and irregular shape of a natural wood perch actually helps to prevent foot cramping in birds, because it naturally encourages them to use different muscles to hang on at different areas of the perch. This is important for the health and comfort of your bird's feet (which they are on at all times…so it's very important).

Style
Small bird cages are available in various styles. Any of our play top bird cages will give your bird a place to hang out and play outside the cage. On the other hand, dome top bird cages provide extra height.

If you don't have a lot of space in your home then even a small bird cage could be in the way. Unfortunately small corner bird cages are hard to find. That's a shame because they take up a lot less floor space. If space is an issue in your home you might want to consider hanging a small bird cage so it is up off the floor.
